Spring is a time to check your house for flooding.

Spring is officially here. After a long, dreary winter, it’s finally time to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. Spring is a delightful time for gardeners, sports enthusiasts and those who simply enjoy the sunshine. However, the warm weather can also bring water-related issues such as flooding and mold.

Check your House for Water Issues

We recommend that you undergo certain precautions before bringing out your watering hose and gardening tools for the first time. Check for water-related issues, such as a flooded basement, leaky pipes or mold. Here are some potential warning signs to watch for:

1. Humid air

According to the EPA, indoor humidity should be below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity. Use a moisture or humidity meter, a relatively inexpensive instrument ($50 or less) that can be found at many hardware stores. Above average humidity may lead to mold issues.

2. Visible Mildew or Mold

Mold may grow indoors when mold spores land on wet surfaces. Mold, which reproduces through tiny spores that float invisibly through the air, cannot grow without moisture. If you have a mold problem, it’s because you have a water problem. If you clean up the mold without remedying the water issue, the mold will grow back.

3. Standing Water

If you have standing water in your basement or water seeping out of your basement walls, you might have an issue with your sump pump. Check it immediately.

4. Deterioration of Flooring

Moisture, mildew and mold can all cause carpet to visibly deteriorate. Feel the carpet for moisture. If it is damp, pull up a small section and check for mold.

5. Lack of Water Flow from Hose or Spigot

If you typically disable your outdoor spigot in the winter to prevent freezing pipes, be sure the valve has been turned back on. Also be sure to check for any blockages caused by sediment or the mechanism.
