sump pump south dakota sanitary sewer systems

If you need to run your sump pump during the winter, what’s the correct way to handle it?

We recently did a post on how to properly address your sump pump in Sioux Falls during the winter, but what about other southeastern South Dakota towns? Here’s a look at proper sump pump procedure for Brandon, Brookings, Vermillion, and Yankton.

In most towns and cities, homeowners or renters using sump pumps have a responsibility to the city — violation of which might prompt a fine.

Sump Pump Brandon

To the east of Sioux Falls, our 9,000 Brandon neighbors are encouraged to disperse their sump pumps in their own yards. If too many people are discharging in the street, especially in the winter, Brandon sump pumps could cause significant water backups.

There are currently just over 10 addresses that have official approval to discharge off their properties because of unique water problems, but most Brandon residents should stick to their own yard and contact city engineer Paul Sanow at 605-582-6515 with questions.

Sump Pump Yankton

According to the Yankton city website, “Sump pumps must be pumped outside and not into the sanitary sewer.”

Like in Brandon, Yankton sump pump users should try to discharge waste water onto grassy areas of their yard and “care should also be taken not to discharge water toward neighboring properties.”

Discharging Yankton sump pumps into the sanitary sewer system (toilets, sinks, showers, and indoor floor drains) makes water treatment more expensive and risks backups. Meanwhile, the storm water system has been designed to handle increased capacity. You might contact Brad Bies, code enforcement official, with questions 605-668-5251.

Sump Pump Brookings

For sump pump users in Brookings, there isn’t too much hassle.

Between March 15th and October 15th each year, Brookings waste water customers need to route sump pumps out of the sanitary sewer system and are encouraged to discharge on their lawns. During the winter months, however, discharging into the sanitary system is okay.

Questions can go to Brookings Municipal Utilities at 605-692-6325.

Sump Pump Vermillion

According to Shane Griese, Vermillion’s utilities manager, all year long the priority is keeping sump pump discharge out of the sanitary system. Instead, the city wants residents to run the water to the curb.

In particularly wet areas during the winter, they may ask you to adjust the location of your sump pump, but other than that Griese said they don’t run into many problems. Contact the engineering division at 605-677-7050 with questions.
