You might be extremely tempted to opt for DIY since you can save a little cash by doing so, and we definitely welcome you to do whatever makes the most sense for your home and budget!
But before you run to the store to pick up a carpet cleaner, take note of the hidden costs of choosing to DIY your carpet cleaning: it takes a ton of time, and if it’s not done just right, you’re running the risk of carpet damage and mold growth, and that’s just the beginning!
It can take several hours to get the job done right.
There are some downsides to DIY carpet cleaning, and the biggest one is that it takes a long time. The process of cleaning your carpets has several steps:
- Move every piece of furniture.
- Vacuum.
- Do a proper pass with the carpet cleaner.
- Go over your freshly washed carpet with a rinse.
- Allow ample time to dry (which could mean that people aren’t allowed on the carpet for several hours).

After every round of cleaner, you’ll need to go over your carpet with a neutralizing solution. But if you don’t use the proper solution – or if you use too much water – you could saturate your carpet too much, which again creates an ideal environment for mold and mildew growth.
