April showers bring May flowers and with it spring brings. . . property claims!

The warmer weather and melting snow have the potential to bring a host of issues. So, in addition to your spring cleaning list, here are five things to keep in mind to prepare your home and cut down on spring property claims.

Examine Windows and Doors

Start with the weather stripping and caulk. Look for cracks or any damage that could let moisture in causing further damage in your home. Frigid temperatures can cause a lot of wear and tear on both and they may need to be replaced with the warming weather to maintain a strong seal.

Clear Yard Materials

Trimming dead branches from trees and keeping your shrubbery tidy keeps things clear and safe for any spring thunderstorms that may pop up unexpectedly. Keeping branches away from utility wires and windows can also cut back on any damage.

If a tree doesn’t have any leaves or new growth, is less than 500 feet from your roof, or seems to be dangerously close to a power line it may be a good idea to remove it.

Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Gutters and downspouts are the tools that direct water away from your home. Keeping them free of debris can prevent damage to your roof and house. If they become clogged with dirt and debris, water can seep inside the foundation and cause serious damage. In addition to making sure gutters and downspouts are free of debris, it’s also important to check the connections are secure and won’t cause leaking problems.

Check Roof and Siding

The harsh winter weather conditions can potentially cause damage to your roof and siding. While cleaning your gutters and downspouts, inspect the exterior of your home for any damage such as missing shingles, cracked siding or sagging overhangs from your roof. Keeping your siding clean can also extend its lifetime.

Test Sump Pump

If your Sioux Falls home has a sump pump, it’s key to make sure it can keep up with the snow melt and rains associated with a midwest spring. Make sure it’s fully operational and has a battery backup in case of power failure.
