Duct cleaning should be done every 3-5 years. Circumstances such as an infestation or new construction may require more immediate attention. The cleaning process — and overall efficiency — of ductwork depends on the type. So what is the best kind of ductwork to have in your house?

Rigid or Flexible Ductwork — What’s the Difference?

Furnace and duct cleaning eliminates dust, pollens, and molds, removing potential allergens from your home. It also increases the efficiency of your home energy system — whether it’s brand new or not. It’s great to get your furnace and duct cleaning out of the way before you move in, but it can be done after, too, or after new construction.

So let’s say you’ve made the decision to have your ducts cleaned. Before looking for a professional to do the work, evaluate the type of ductwork in your home.

  • Flexible ductwork is a crinkly, flexible tube of metal wire coil surrounded by layers of plastic, insulation and vinyl or foil.
  • Rigid ductwork consists of galvanized steel tubing and lacks flexibility. It can be insulated from the inside or outside.

Both types have advantages and disadvantages. Most newer homes are built with rigid ductwork. Flexible and rigid ductwork both require different cleaning solutions. Not all cleaning companies will clean flexible ductwork. INTEK will. We offer comprehensive duct cleaning in Sioux Falls and Yankton.

Flexible Ductwork – Pros and Cons

Flexible ductwork is easy to install, easy to replace and can be fit into those tight corners of the ceiling you can’t reach with a rigid piece of tubing. However, the cons are that the material is easily damaged (especially the insulation), susceptible to collapse and decreased airflow, and prone to incorrect installation.

Rigid Ductwork – Pros and Cons

Rigid ductwork is more resistant to moisture than flexible ductwork. It doesn’t sag, keeping airflow open and consistent. It’s also sturdier and easier to clean. On the other hand, rigid ductwork is more expensive and difficult to install, and pieces with insulation on the inside may be more prone to moisture buildup and eventually mold.

Overall, rigid ductwork is considered superior due to its durability and superior air flow. Some contractors will use rigid ductwork for the majority of the ventilation system and fill in the gaps with flexible pieces.

Should You Clean Your Own Ducts?

Duct cleaning is a job best left to the professionals, especially if your ductwork is insulated. Insulation can be a health hazard and special tools are needed to clean it properly. Contact us to schedule a consultation or cleaning for your ductwork.
